Midway through September, Cubs starter Justin Steele was neck and neck with Padres pitcher Blake Snell in the NL Cy Young race. Unfortunately, Steele had back to back bad outings in his last two starts. He allowed 6 earned runs in both of those starts, and looks to have fallen out of contention for the Cy Young based on the current implied odds. All of that being said, Justin Steele is the better starting pitcher in this matchup tonight. The Braves will start Bryce Elder who walked 5 hitters and allowed 2 home runs in 3.2 innings pitched in his last start. Elder has a 4.57 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP this month. His metrics have consistently been going downhill each month since June. The Braves bullpen has been struggling, with an ERA north of 5 in their last 30 games. The Cubs bullpen has been one of the best in baseball down the stretch. Our biggest concern with this wager is how well the Braves hit left handed pitching. Steele is a lefty, but he beat the Braves the only time he faced them this season. Each game moving forward for the Cubs will be played like a must win game. Atlanta has already clinched the division. They also have a 3.5 game cushion on the Dodgers for the #1 overall seed in the NL. We will side with the better starting pitcher, and the team who needs the win more. Cubs moneyline for a half unit is our wager.
